Permanent magnet synchronous motors achieve high efficiency and reduce power consumption
Traction Motors
Traction Motors
Toshiba has been developing and manufacturing traction motors since the company started its railway business in 1899. As an alternative to the reliable asynchronous motors (ASM), Toshiba has taken traction motor technology to a new level: the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for rail vehicles is efficient, quiet and low maintenance due to its fully enclosed structure.
*2 Compared to a conventional self-ventilated type induction motor; measurement of an initial production machine based on JIS E6102 (PMSM: manufactured 2009, IM: manufactured 2007)
Features
A maximum efficiency of 97%*¹ is achieved, resulting in significant efficiency improvements over conventional asynchronous motors. At the same time, the traction motor operates quietly*².
In addition, maintenance intervals are less frequent and costs are lower compared to conventional traction motors. This advantage is due to the fully enclosed structure which significantly reduces operational pollution as forced air cooling is not necessary due to the lower operating temperature.

Benefits
- Smarter: improved maintenance operations
- Reliable: fully enclosed structure enhances product reliability
- Efficient: more energy saving thanks to a high efficiency of 97%*¹
- Quieter: noise level is reduced compared to conventional open self-ventilated type induction motors*2
